A Grain of Salt

In a recent article Salt, We Misjudged You, Gary Taubes writes:

“Salt consumption is said to raise blood pressure, cause hypertension and increase the risk of premature death. This is why the Department of Agriculture’s dietary guidelines still consider salt Public Enemy No. 1, coming before fats, sugars and alcohol. It’s why the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has suggested that reducing salt consumption is as critical to long-term health as quitting cigarettes.
And yet, this eat-less-salt argument has been surprisingly controversial — and difficult to defend. Not because the food industry opposes it, but because the actual evidence to support it has always been so weak.”

Read the whole article.  It’s a reminder to be skeptical, particularly about recommendations which push so hard against day to day experience.

Atypical Friday

Fridays are generally a day with light gym traffic, especially when the weather is good.  Today was an exception.  The numbers were expanded as Josh and Shelley stopped in to snatch and squat and catch up with some of the regulars (Rip, Ronnie, Mark Brown, Alfred, Steve, Colton, Kyle and many others) during their visit to North Texas from NYC.  If you missed them today, you may be able to run into them as they train at other times this weekend.

Alfred & Ed

Alfred welcomes Ed Coan to WFAC.

Ed Coan and the Olympic PressEd practices the use of the hips in the Olympic press-style as he warms up.

We were honored to have Ed Coan and Marty Gallagher join us last weekend to record Starting Strength Series interviews, eat some local delicacies and get in a bit of training.
